Fall Campaigns

are over all fairly disappointing.

The campaign for Saks fith Avenue featuring Stella Tennant looks at first glance to be totally boring.

Totally regular.

Wait wait wait. she's not retouched. She has moles on her arm, she has a dimple on her chin. In another photo she has those neck wrinkles EVERYONE has when you turn your head, everyone but models. This is revolutionary. In a very meek way.

She's still beautiful. but she's not impossible. this is interesting.

New Creative Strategies

It's a pet interest of mine about how young creatives get 'er done.

Several models of fund raising/paying the bills were suggested in a blog post by Kevin Kelly in March of 2008. He called the post 1000 True Fans, with the idea that you could live off of the merch sales/donations/ideas/adorations of 1000 truly devoted fans. That it could be that magical balance between celebrity and obscurity.

It's an inspiring idea, that the internet affords this boutique fame, which relies heavily on providing content (of some kind or another) at no cost to the user with "premium" content available.

Now here's the actual story.

I was reading Coilhouse online and came across a clip for the tunnel.

It has this wonderful quality that I associate with American urban documentaries where there's a pervasive sadness, and a youthful innocence, even in the face of great age (the city, to a lesser extent the participants). It makes me excited to see the whole thing. But here's the catch, they need funding. They've put this trailer out as a sort of pilot for the film. The more interest in the film, easier to get a backer I'm guessing.

In the same vein, but of a very different style, was the Brooklyn based film project Up On The Roof. This film did screenings of unfinished footage in order to raise the money to get editing time. I saw about 20 minutes of it at a loft party once upon a time and fell in love. The website doesn't seem to let on that the final funding for this work was crowd sourced (which would make the website cooler) but they do have a remaining excerpt on youtube. It looks like the film is only available for public screenings, no distro, which sucks cause I would scrounge up some pennies for this dvd.

What every girl wants?

One of my facebook friends (I mean, I guess they're a friend. But we haven't really talked for more than 30 seconds since high school. and it's starting to get to the point where I'll need to be all impressive to these 30 second people for at least an hour. Oh reunions) is a blog writer. Well aren't we all? Yes, no, maybe. Anyway Mr Reynolds writes an interesting weekly column for blogto.com, this week he's shooting guns. He introduces us to his host, who has a pathological thing for pink. And who is responsible for above pink shooting glasses.

She runs Packing in Pink a ladies gun club thingy in Toronto. It's all very not my scene, but fascinating.

Anyway. Pink shooting glasses.

The Sartorialist

Took this picture.

Which screams to me "I wanna look like rick owens....!!!!" just isn't doing it for me. I love all black. I love mixing sheers with solids. I like mixing textures, and white socks are totally awesome.

But It's all a bit too calculated.

More ideas than time

I'm still not done my streetwear collection (shooting it on saturday, so I better work today), and I'm already thinking about fancy stuff.

I have come upon a really large amount of emerald green satin, it's just lovely, and I want to do something fantastic with it. The problem is I don't have a mannequin just yet, so I'll probably be waiting until I get one to fiddle with it, but so far I have lots of ideas.

It was a good day for fabric shopping

I want to make comfortable cotton blazers. Blazers that make you look like a teacher.

This is what I want to do.

But I think that might wait until the middle of winter.

Everything Does Fall Apart

Marilyn Minter for MAC.

There's a three part artist centered collection at MAC right now. Marylin Minter, who's shots are always fashion usually just this side of trashy, has a 4 colours of glitter (gold, copper, red, mauve), 4 colours of pigment (mauve, taupe, fuscia, and a sort of 80's dusty mauve/brown), and a skin gloss. So you too can look like the edge between beauty and destruction.

Burning Man Envy

Back in february I said I didn't want to go, didn't buy a ticket, and didn't make the preparations for this insane party in the desert. I've never been, and hadn't really paid attention to the festival in the past couple of years as it's blown up into a really really really massive event with a lot of rules.

But then I started to get excited for my friends, and started looking into this whole insanity again.

I am envious. If you're heading to Black Rock City have some fun for me. please.

Black Lipstick

This is all the fault of En Vogue.

Black lips were the next big thing for fall 08, so that means that us mere mortals will be seeing it at our local makeup counter for more than just halloween this year.

Haute Macabre spilled the beans on MAC's plans for black this fall; creme lipstick, special brushes, 18 shades of black?

Last year the big deal was YSL's pur gloss in black (it's soooooo dark, I love it), and there will probably be copies of this black lip gloss on the shelves come september.

(it was halloween... I promise)

En Vogue Moment

Ok so we're starting to embrace our inner 90's, some more than others, but it's happening. This makes me think of the last time mainstream whatevers were wearing black lipstick and leather. (What do you mean this trend isn't new? who would have thunk it).

Not the best en vogue video ever, but the last with my favourite band member, Dawn Robinson, who left to form Lucy Pearl. Without her crazy fantastic lead vocals the band were like destiny's child without beyonce. More than a little lost, but great costumes.

En Vogue - whatever

This is post Robinson En Vogue, this was 10 years ago and there were different elements of goth and fetish culture being borrowed than there has been the past 2 or 3 years, but the influence is still very strong. Even if the song is kind of crappy.

Ok I think I'm done.

question marks

I would love to know where this was from.

The above photos are also of unknown origin, except I know that at least one of the photos is from Montreal in the 60's when students got into the hydro quebec building during a protest. The final picture seems to be from Baden Germany, according the name of the photo.

Three Star Seed "I'm On Fire"

Ok, so what what? That's my bestest bestest up there breathing 2 story fireballs. Also it turns out that the reason why he's rocking that Top Hat like he owns it is... that he owns it.

Terrence Drake has been taking the toronto fire performance scene by storm since moving there a little over two months ago. Known for daring human candle holds, and daring fireballs (you're really supposed to get that stuff away from your face as soon as possible, he um, doesn't always do that. the visual effect is intense) he's been seen at the multiple private events and on the main stage at Toronto Pride. I'm all tickled pink. Go freaks go.

Punk Butts

One of my favourite old school websites Punk Butts is a collection of pictures of Punk Butts in the tokyo punk scene circa 2003.

I was reminded of this yesterday as I patched up a Punk Butt pair of pants in order to pay my internet bill. Punk Butt Barter, is there anything better than that???
