Lingerie!

Is not something I normally do, however it seems to be the only thing I'm sketching right now. I keep thinking about making myself some sort of crazed one piece out of left over mesh from a couple seasons ago.

My only real experience with sewing lingerie has been in some fairly strange circumstances. There was the Laser Bra, which was made out of waxed linen, black cotton, and elastic. I may use this pattern with different fabric for a non-costume piece. The glowing swirls were made using Light-up shoelaces from Dealextreme.com.

A stab at a triangle bra using PVC, wide elastic, and black ribbon. I found that the ribbon really should have been replaced by a stiff elastic.

And the most recent foray into the world of boob, the rose petal bra. This one was ridiculous. I used the triangle bra pattern and cut it out of nude mesh. I then hand sewed 400 polyester rose petals to the cups. After covering the cups in petals, I attached a wide pink ribbon to the bottom, and a thinner pink ribbon for a halter strap. I probably wouldn't have even started this if I hadn't had a lot of time at my day job that allowed me to hand sew while earning money. It took around 20 hours to finish.

Oh! also causing all this to be on the brain, I've been following The lingerie addict on tumblr. So many amazing and inspiring pieces on there all the time.

They cover up the tattoos nicely, so that's usually why I wear them to work. That and they're pretty. Pretty is good.

But really I need something more, I'm finding myself stuck in a rut. It's a rut with vintage hermes ties and linen trousers, but it's a rut none-the-less.

Style Icons Part 1

I feel like every time I turn on the TV (or the internet...) there's a Fashion Reality show telling me that so and so is a Fashion Icon. We're flooded with them, we're expected to know them, and we also supposed to have our own personal gods (or, um, icons).

I think it might be true that we all have them. A touch point in popular or personal culture that is a beacon that guides us through the dark times of our closets. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has uttered the desperate words "What would Madonna do?". The issue with airing them publicly (and I am so about to air them publicly), is that they then become available to be judged. If Nina Garcia got all huffy at me on Project Runway and asked me to explain how my style icons could ever wear that latex bikini and space tunic I would have to explain. My style icons are not glamorous socialites. Not usually anyway. I don't believe that high fashion is the be all and end all of looking good.

On to the Lexicon of my Fashion Icons.

The First- Cyndi Lauper

I was exposed to the greatness of Cyndi Lauper at a very young age. I remember being dressed up in a party dress, putting coloured hair spray in my pouffed up hair and jumping around on my mom's bed to Girls Just Want to Have Fun, I may have been 4.

I was excited be her sense of acceptable rebellion. She was in party dresses and makeup. She was singing pop songs. But she wasn't doing it for you, she was doing it as a form of personal expression and for fun. Over time her spirit has carried me through to a strong understanding of myself and how I prefer to dress. Also a pioneer of showing her underpants in non-sexy fashion.

The Next One- Madonna

Although not always a driving force in the life of my wardrobe one cannot ignore the power of Madonna.

She's more a like a check and balance, than an inspiration. In moments where I need to be the center of attention in the most broken down glamorous way, I think of Madonna. I'm not saying it works, I'm just saying it happens.

Teen Teen Teen- Courtney Love

This one is special, as Mz Love totally owns one of my accessories. A style icon who has at least in a little way gave a nod back in my direction? Worth mentioning.

I tried my best as a 14 year old to look like her, FAILED. However knowing the power of a baby doll dress and a boyfriend sweater has never been a bad thing.

France is moving to ban Veiled faces in certain public places (like transport and hospitals), as a pro- assimilation anti-Islamic extremists move. So many issues with that sort of decree, but it reminds me of a Quebec movie that deals with reasons to wear the veil and the decisions of a young Muslim Quebecois girl coming of age.

I have not seen it, but I love the idea of show casing this issue through the choices of a 13 year old girl.

Process

I've always intended to use this as a forum for showing my process in creating garments. This hasn't really worked out, I usually get all caught up in doing and forget about documenting. Recently I've started to hand make a pleated chiffon dress. This is one of those things that takes forever, so lots of time to take pictures.

This is the process of pleating with basting stitches the chiffon onto a piece of nude mesh. Once the chiffon is all pleated and basted, I go over with small stitches along the fold lines I can see through the mesh. Once it's all done I trimmed the piece and finished the edge with large running stitches.

To be fair this doesn't look like it actually uses laser light, so I still need one of those (I'm thinking some sort of modified starfield through to Gibsonian Matrix style animation in green laser superimposed on the white light starfield. sexy). but really. This is a piece of brilliance for 12$ including shipping.

My build budget has just been significantly decreased.

And it involves a lot of rhinestones.

I've been using Tumblr as an easy image/style research portal. It's also cheaper than buying 8 million magazines. Which is what I usually do. You can look through hundreds of images in a short period of time that have been curated by an individual (or a group of individuals) with a specific taste. You can easily glean out trends, and ideas that are leaning towards trends, as well as just get wowed by wonderful images over and over again.

I'm loving Rhinestones right now. I've seen some trim up in the garment district that's a row of set stones, but it's 4$ a meter, and that's too expensive. I will continue to investigate the sparkle, and we'll see what happens.

I've been watching videos of shuttle launches for inspiration. I love the idea of what music makes sense for the mystery of space. This video has a really happy nerd doing play by play on the shuttle launch (official NASA play by play) with some soft quiet intense orchestral stuff in the background.

Wants and Needs and Not so muches

I've been looking at these scraps of old leather on my work bench this week and thinking about making a little waist cincher thing out of them. Got me thinking about how fabulous a leather corset can look. With the alternative being shown in mainstream venues more and more, a lot of these designers that started out catering to the fetish market now have a much wider customer base to deal with. Especially with the WunderKammer that is Etsy.

Antiseptic Fashions have been at this for a while, and it shows. Their pieces are well constructed, and strong in concept. I'm surprised I haven't seen more in major fashion editorials. They're now available on etsy and while the prices are high these are true investment pieces.

While looking around on etsy I stumbled upon the etsy store Erikaswang, which I'm assuming is the work of Erik Aswang. It's in the vein of antiseptic, but has a more baroque element; even in the austere pieces in his shop. Again this stuff isn't cheap, but really who wouldn't want to walk into a club wearing this:

Ok maybe just me. But really worn over a long flowing light weight black silk dress with some serious boots, and everyone would just die.

His other work is also note worthy.

Ruffely Goodness

So once upon a time I made this

And now Chanel and some other lovely pants have jumped on the Ruff bandwagon (please note I take absolutely no responsibility for this, as much as I would like to).

There's been a run on ruffles for the past couple of years, with Heavy hitters like Chanel and Givenchy covering garments in them. The neck ruff has had success with alternative designers, but to see it being shown on top runways is a little strange. It's certainly a statement piece, and one of those items that will get you noticed. It will be interesting to see it worn on the street. For the most part my big ruffs tend to go to performers, and the little ones are more like fabric necklaces anyway. I think I'm going to need to find a way to wear a ruff without it being a big deal.

I'll report back to you the results.

I saw Adult Entertainment last night with a packed house. The piece, along with all the pieces in the series, takes place in a dingy motel room. The play ran a bit long for a one act (1:40 ish) but was well acted, and totally fabulous.

Starting on Dec 2nd Cinema L'amour is going to be showing Grindhouse movies one Wednesday a month!

The Cinema L'amour is an amazing historic Theatre in the heart of the Plateau. I'm totally excited to go see Faster Pussy Cat Kill Kill on Dec 2nd. Only 3$ and proceeds go to Head and Hands.

I've started a Top Secret project with my bestie that has me drawing myself as a cartoon a lot. It's interesting, but the problem is keeping the character consistent. I usually just take a picture with my webcam and then draw my face from that. It's fantastic having such quick access to reference material, even if it is my own face.

As a side note this character is me minus some stuff. No glasses, piercings, or tattoos. or zits for that matter.

When (and if) the project goes live I'll let you guys know what's going on.

Gucci Gucci Gucci

I feel like the brand was still riding on the wave of Tom Ford's work until recently. The most recent creative director, Frida Giannini, has finally stepped into something good. SS10 is looking slik, luxurious, on-trend and different. You can see echoes of Givenchy and Balmain but with a slim line that is trademark Gucci Luxury.

There's also a string of ideas and details that can be echoed and pulled into clothes that people actually wear. This is the kind of collection that could start trends, not just follow them. The sweeping crossovers, and sexy cutouts are reminiscent of the 90's without being a scary remake. It's kind of exciting to see clothes like this from Gucci.

Through the magic of ebay I have procured a Holga and it is on it's way to my grubby little paws.

and really I probably should have just picked one up at Urban Outfitters.

but I wanted one that was as shitty as possible.

Cause the great thing about this camera is that it's medium format (high resolution, ability to have very small grain on a regular sized image, etc) but the lens is crappy plastic, the body leaks light, it basically only shoots one f-stop so everything is always under or over exposed, the projected image from the lens doesn't match the film mask so there's usually vignetting and or weirdness, and basically you get this great high quality shitty as fuck image.

And I'm about 15 years late to the party.

So this week has been pretty heavy on the publicity, and I am not complaining. First I was featured on Burdastyle and that was totally cool, but reminded me that I should probably clean up some of my duplicate projects there, and pay a little more attention to what everyone else is doing. It's a really cool site where you get this little sneak peek into people's studios around the world.

Second was a feature on Etsy's Storque Blog. Where my Mesh hex leggings were featured as Boot Appropriate. And I have to agree.

Third, I was also featured in a Montreal treasury on etsy, and that makes me happy because that its user selected. So someone just really liked it a lot. Not as a promotional tool, but just out of interest. Yay!

Ok off to run errands, get library books, and prepare for a photoshoot(!!!).

Phoebe Philo used to be head designer for Chloe. She's recently been picked up as the head designer for Celine, sort of the big sister of Chloe. It's a long standing french ready to wear line which is known for being lady like, wearable, and casually elegant.

Well, Phoebe Philo has modernized the house, interpreted current trends for her client base of 35-55 women of means. It's a blend of leather separates and drapey ladylike sportswear. Nothing is yelling at me to wear it, but I would not be put out if just about anything from this collection showed up in my closet.

I think it becomes pretty clear it's the later once you think about have to by 100 cbrs just to hem a shirt with. and then you need the little tool that closes them up. It's 50 bucks just to hem your shirt.

However, the last thing I'm going to do is slag Stella McCartney for these bad boys.

this dude is a Japanese city active wear dude. His clothes are simple, technical, and fantastic. His entire ss10 collection screams buy me.

I just love the orange/coral grey combination in technical fabrics.

It has that kind of weird diaper looking crotch, I'm assuming, because it has a second set of buttons just under the bust for the trousers to attach too. so they can be high waisted... ??? but as they are the crotch looks funny, and leg width looks like it could be adjusted more at the thigh less at the calf.

It's serious business time. Fall has become serious indie music festival time up here in the north north east. There's Pop Montreal, CMJ, and my personal favourite Halifax Pop Explosion.

I'm going to be all around Pop Montreal, and I'll be volunteering at the symposium. IT starts tomorrow! and there's just soooo much going on. Totally excited. I'll post some highlights once I have a better idea what I'm going to see.

Total Genius.

She makes insane futuristic constructed knitwear. Her spring 09 collection was featured in a slew of editorials this year, and has set her up for a break through.

A lot of her pieces in her new collection are heavily conceptual, but I found the following looks had something to offer a more everyday consumer.

But nothing here was as wonderful as spring 09.

New York is Over, and the glitterati and friends are over in London, before they head off to Milan and then Paris.

I've been busy, and haven't been through every single show so far, but I totally loved Francisco Costa's show for Calvin Klein Collection, but I always love what he does.

This is for Spring 2010, and these are all the sort of loose easy pieces that can be worn with flip flops and still look luxurious.

It's minimal without being black.

and without being minimal for that matter.

Which on it's talent page doesn't even have a portforlio of models. It has a little slide show of editioral pages, and covers of magazines that you've never heard of.

And it has This as a Plus size Model.

If I were to guess measurements, 38, 30, 38ishhh. She could be a 37 on top. She could be smaller or larger on the bottom. That pose is a good one to make you look curvier.

That's not plus size.

That's a hot chick.

And I understand That a regular model is itty bitty. Like itty bitty.

but a size 8 is not plus size.
